There is no cure for fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia care involves finding ways to limit the impact of the disease on your life and treatment of symptoms. Your doctor can prescribe your medications to help with pain but the role you play in dealing with the disease is important to treating your symptoms.

Self-management means you take responsibility for managing your condition. You must take the responsibility for your own health because whatever treatments your doctor recommends, they will not do any good if you do not follow them. Your doctor can only tell you what he or she thinks will work for you but only you can change your behavior.

Self-management means you and your doctor are partners in your healthcare. It means you are willing to seek advice from your doctor and to follow through. Fibromyalgia is one of those conditions that does not have a “one fits all” treatment plan so it is imperative that you work with your doctor to create and find a treatment plan that works specifically for you.

Self-management involves a variety of things including maintaining a healthy outlook on life. It means finding support and taking medications as prescribed. It means exercising, eating healthy and losing weight. It also means recognizing stress and taking steps to reduce it and it also involves establishing healthy sleep habits. All these things are important because you are unique. You are the only one who knows how you feel and how fibromyalgia affects you so be responsible and self-management is the only way to do that.
